JOEY TATE

Director of Coaching, The Basketball Embassy

Joey Tate was born in San Antonio, Texas where he grew up and attended Taft High School. As a player at Taft Joey was a 1st Team All-City, 1st Team All-Region, 2nd Team All State and 2-time team MVP for his Raiders that made the Texas State 5A Semi-Finals. In college Joey went on to play NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball at the University of Texas Pan American in McAllen Texas.

After teaching and coaching one year at Weslaco High School, Joey returned to Taft High School in San Antonio to be the Assistant Varsity Coach. After 4 years, Coach Tate was named the Head Men’s Basketball Coach at Taft High School where he experienced tremendous success. In 2011 Coach Tate took his team to the Texas State 5A Semi-Finals and was named San Antonio Express News Coach of the Year in 2011.

Joey joined Chris Dial in his travels and work with the Turkish and Romanian Basketball Federations, as well as FIBA and the United States State Department’s Sports Diplomacy projects. Since 2011, Joey has assisted Chris in developing a recognizable brand of fundamental basketball that has positively influenced youth throughout Turkey, Romania, Bulgaria, Macedonia, and Kosovo.

In 2016, Joey served as Head Coach for the U16 Macedonian Men’s National Team and led them through selection and preparation for the European Championships B Division Tournament in Sofia, Bulgaria. The team improved on its 2015 finish of 22nd, making great strides under Coach Joey Tate as they marched ahead to finish 16th in 2016.

Coach Joe, or the “King” as he is often referred to in Turkey, assumes the title of Director of Coaching for The Basketball Embassy and recently completed his first Basketball camp abroad in Italy. Coach Tate has been integral in the early successes of The Basketball Embassy. He took his first-class instruction to China in the Spring of 2016 assisting in the development of the Olajuwon Bateer Dream Academy. Joey now resides in Dallas, Texas and continues to seek out opportunities to teach and coach the game he loves.
