Bridging Communities Through Basketball: The Youth Ambassador Program

At The Basketball Embassy (TBE), the game of basketball is more than just a sport — it's a powerful tool for connection, mentorship, and uplifting the community. One of our most impactful initiatives, the Youth Ambassador Program, is a shining example of how basketball can drive meaningful change.

Through partnerships with Haven for Hope and SAMMinistries, the Youth Ambassador Program provides at-risk and homeless youth in San Antonio with a safe and positive space to connect with collegiate athletes, adult mentors, and caring volunteers. These sessions are hosted Monday through Thursday evenings, alternating between the two partner locations.

Chris Dial, the founder of TBE and current head coach of the Texas A&M-San Antonio men’s basketball team, and former head coach at Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) leads this initiative with heart and purpose. Coach Dial not only leads by example on the court but also off it. He regularly encourages his players to get involved in the community through YAP and use their platform to make a difference.

Building Character Through Hoops

Each hour-long session is a dynamic blend of basketball skill development, mini competitive games, and group discussions — all designed to promote teamwork, confidence, personal growth and how to properly fuel your body through health tips.

Coach Dial likes to introduce a value-driven “Word of the Day” like “kindness” or “integrity” each night and leads a conversation about what that word means in real life — in the classroom, at home, on the court, and beyond.

These mini-life lessons challenge the kids to reflect on their actions, expand their perspectives, and consider how they can become positive forces within their circles. It’s not just about learning to dribble or shoot — it’s about learning how to treat people, how to lead, and how to grow.

Additionally, TBE is excited to partner with Mandy Tyler, the Spurs' Sports Dietitian Nutritionist, to creatively promote nutritional literacy and inspire youth to explore fun, effective ways to improve their nutrition.

Get Involved

The presence of collegiate athletes and dedicated volunteers is a core part of what makes this program so special. When kids see role models who look like them, who care, and who show up consistently, it leaves a lasting impact. It gives them hope, encouragement, and a sense of belonging.

TBE strongly believes in the power of community involvement and is always welcoming new volunteers to join the mission. Whether you're an experienced coach, a college athlete, or someone who simply wants to give back, your presence can make a difference. If you're interested in supporting the Youth Ambassador Program or volunteering at an upcoming session, we’d love to hear from you. Please go to our website and click the link in our bio. Join us in creating meaningful moments, empowering the next generation, and using basketball as a vehicle for positive change.

Together, we can transform lives — one ball, one word, and one evening at a time.
